After taking over power in Afghanistan and changing the country’s name, the Taliban have tried to portray themselves as more moderate than when they imposed a strict form of Islamic rule in the late 1990s.

They did this by urging women to join the Government, but they have reportedly captured Salima Mazari, one of the first women governors in Afghanistan and the woman who took up arms to fight them.

The United Nations has said that it would work with the Taliban only if they respect human rights.

In the 1990s when the Taliban was in power, they confined women to their homes, banned television and music, and held public executions.
