Yesterday, it was reported that a 21-story building that is still under construction, crumbled and collapsed in Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria.
Most Nigerian news media have reported that as many as 100 workers were feared trapped under the rubble at a construction site.
At least 22 people including the owner of the building have been reported dead due to the unfortunate incident.
Nine people have been rescued from the rubble and have been hospitalized due to injuries they sustained.
When asked what could have been the reason for the building collapse, Emeka Okoronkwo who is an estate surveyor and valuer told Sunrise Daily that in building construction work, there are design failures, construction failures, services failures, and maintenance failures.
He went further to say that “In the country of the ignorance, the amateur becomes the teacher.”
He finally said that “what happened there was construction failure. Period!”
The building collapse has been blamed by others on two major factors which are as follows:
1. Contractors using poor-quality and shoddy materials.
2. Lack of proper building construction regulations on the part of the government.
Sanwo Olu, the governor of Lagos has ordered an immediate inquiry into the cause of the building collapse.
The collapse is said to have occurred at about 2 p.m. in the neighborhood of Ikoyi which is one of the crowded and busy parts of Lagos.
Most people are relieved as the building was still under construction and there were no occupants. The number of people trapped in the rubble (mostly construction workers) was only estimated.
However, rescue efforts continued into the evening, but some Nigerians complained on social media about the sluggish response by authorities.
In 2013, a three-story building in Ebute Meta neighborhood in Lagos collapsed and at least 6 people were feared dead.
