Child marriage occurs in some parts of the world and the U.S is against it. Do you know the legal age to get married in New York?
If you’ve always thought it’s 18 and above, then you are totally wrong because it is not 18, not 17, not 16, not even 15 but 14. Yes, you read it correctly. According to Human Rights Watch, as at Feb. 2017, 14 years old was allowed to get married according to New York law. This is strange but true.
Human Rights Watch said in a letter to New York lawmakers that New York State’s legislators and the Governor should back a proposed law to help end child marriage in New York.
It was further noted that: “Child marriage is any marriage of a person under the age of 18. Under current law, the minimum age of marriage in New York is 18, but the law permits exceptions to that minimum age, allowing children age 16 and 17 to marry with parental approval, and 14- and 15-year-olds to marry if they have permission from a judge in addition to their parents.
The vast majority of US states permit marriage before the age of 18 under some circumstances.”
Tanzania, Sudan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malawi, Yemen, Zimbabwe, etc, to mention a few, are among countries that are used to practicing child marriage. Unfortunately, it takes place in the U.S also. This is being revealed at a time that America and other countries, are trying to end child marriage all over the world.

Human Rights Watch says that at least 3,850 children below 18 were married in New York between 2000 and 2010. Married girls are more likely to drop out of school, live in poverty, and undergo lots of other limitations or set back in society.
