The Omicron coronavirus was first reported to the World Health Organization (W.H.O) by South Africa on 25th November 2021. Two days later, the W.H.O designated it as a variant of concern and gave it the name “Omicron.”
Contrary to reports that Omicron came from South Africa, the Dutch authority has said that Omicron was present in Europe before South Africa reported its first case. Whatever the case may be, politics or political issues should not be made out of serious health issues that affect the world.
The Netherlands said it has even carried out a test on the Omicron virus on November 19 and November 23 2021, and it discovered that the new variant shows more resistance to the vaccine than the ones known to mankind before now.
It means South Africa reported its first Omicron case a week later after this test was carried out in Holland. But news media across the globe are reporting that Omicron started in South Africa.
This has prompted several western world countries to respond with what is now seen as the “racist travel ban” targeting African Nations.
After Canada expanded its travel ban restrictions to include Egypt and Nigeria, the W.H.O decided to warn that blanket travel bans risked doing more harm than good.
The W.H.O added that the likely futility of broad travel restrictions was underscored as the Dutch government has reported that Omicron was present in their country before South Africa.
The World Health Organization believes that Omicron may be more transmissible than the other variants due to its high number of mutations.
The Bottomline is irrespective of where Omicron started, it is more important for the whole world to stop making a debate out of this, and work together to find a solution to the so-called Omicron coronavirus that has an unusually large number of mutations, several of which were previously undetected.
The COVID-19 vaccines that are available now are meant to target the spike protein of the mutations that were known to the vaccine developers.
