While many people are suffering in Nigeria, some embezzle public funds and live luxurious lives. Acting on a tip-off, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered a huge sum of money in an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos, Nigeria. The money recovered was $43.4m, £27,800, and N23.2m. The owner of the money which was neatly packed in a residential building in the 7th Floor apartment at 16, Osborne Road in Ikoyi is still unknown.
Women were seen entering the house on different occasions with big bags, popularly known in Nigeria as “Ghana Must Go”. Neighbors were made to believe that the women were often bringing in bags of clothes to the house.
The building was empty and the guard at the gate told the EFCC operatives that nobody actually lives in the house which looks abandoned.
Armed with a search warrant from the court, EFCC members decided to force their way into the house. Bundles of money which comprises 3 different currencies were found in two of the four-bedroom apartment. EFCC decided to move the cash to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Three individuals who were reportedly linked to the money have denied ownership or having anything to do with the cash. The individuals are namely: former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alh. Adamu Mua’zu, former PPMC boss, Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue, and the Senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District, Solomon Adeola. Meanwhile, the anti-graft commission has secured a court order of interim forfeiture of the cash.
