The United Nations (UN) has ordered Nigeria to unconditionally release and compensate Nnamdi Kanu. The UN gave Nigeria a period of six months to report back on the transmission of its opinions on Kanu’s matter as well as the complete analysis of the steps taken to comply with all the recommendations thereof.

Kanu’s lawyer has accused Nigeria of torturing Kanu and inflicting inhuman or degrading treatment on him.

The UN therefore referred the case of Kanu’s torture to Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment for further consideration.

Kanu, who jumped bail in Nigeria before fleeing to the UK, was arrested in Kenya. Both Nigeria and Kenya are signatories to the UN Convention. In a 16-page report dated July 20, 2022, the UN wants them to comply with the Convention.

This article will be updated as soon as we obtain information regarding the issue from the Nigerian government.
