Nigerian students willing to study abroad see Canada as a more attractive destination compared to the UK based on the following reasons:
1. In the UK, Nigerian students reportedly pay more than three times the fees paid by UK students or those from EU countries.
2. In the UK, the removal of a visa that allowed foreign students to work for two years after finishing their studies, did not augur well with Nigerians.
3. Canada is believed to have less stressful visa processes and clearer pathways to postgraduate work and residency.
However, in a bid to get back its share of the lucrative global education market, the UK government has started to reverse its immigration policy.
In August 2021, Belgium revised its immigration policy to allow students to stay for up to a year on their temporary visas to look for a job.
