Ramsay Hunt Syndrome has absolutely nothing to do with being a celebrity. The rare virus only gets more awareness if it is caught by a celebrity.

The 28-yr-old Canadian Singer Justin Bieber who has 240 million followers on Instagram, has announced through a video message on his Instagram page that his face is partially paralyzed by Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) is caused by varicella-zoster, the same virus that causes chicken pox and shingles. Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is a rare neurological condition that can trigger facial paralysis to the victim.

RHS is a rare neurological disorder characterized by paralysis of the facial nerve (facial palsy) and a rash affecting the ear or mouth. Ear abnormalities such as ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss may also be present.

According to Bieber, this neurological issue had now obliged him to take a break from his regular work and he canceled all his upcoming tours.

In the shared video, Bieber said “As you can see, I can’t smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move, so there is full paralysis on this side of my face. Obviously, as you can probably see from my face, I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.”

Bieber went further to say that the virus had attacked the nerve in his ear and his facial nerves and has “caused my face to have paralysis.”

“So, for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I am just physically obviously not capable of doing them,” he added.

Experts say The earlier Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caught, the better the chance of recovery. It is now known that the varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.

Compared with Bell’s palsy (facial paralysis without rash), patients with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome often have more severe paralysis at onset and are less likely to recover completely.

However, Bieber said he was doing some facial exercises to get his face back to normal and he assured his fans that his face will be back to normal.
