UPDATE: The man living with a pig heart in his chest died after two months.

Hoping that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, scientists have worked for decades to figure out how to save human lives with animal organs. It seems the breakthrough is finally there.

This is the first time a gene-edited pig has been used as an organ donor. After all hopes seem to have been dashed, Dave Bennett, 57, who had terminal heart disease, agreed to be the first to risk the experimental surgery.

The surgery was carried out at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Bennett has been kept alive through this method and he has been living with a pig heart beating inside his chest for the past 4 days.

His son David has described the whole scenario as a miracle. “This is nothing short of a miracle,” said David. He added that “That’s what my dad needed, and that’s what I feel like he got.”

Bartley Griffith was the lead surgeon for the nine-hour surgery operation. Bennett’s heart was replaced with one from a 1-year-old, 240-pound pig gene-edited and bred specifically for this purpose.

Statistically, about 6,000 people die every year waiting in vain for someone else’s tragedy to provide them with a kidney, heart, or lung.

With the aid of the so-called xenotransplantation (the process of transplanting an organ or another part of the body from one species to a different species of animals with similar characteristics,) lots of lives will now be saved.
