At least 41 prisoners have died after a fire swept through an overcrowded Tangerang jail in Indonesia.

The building, which housed 2,000 inmates, was said to have a maximum capacity of 600 inmates, and only 15 guards were on duty for the entire building.

Some critics are blaming the corrupt officials in the country for the incident.

Last month, a Nigerian diplomatic agent was arrested, manhandled, and humiliated by a group of corrupt Indonesian policemen.

The blaze at Tangerang prison reportedly broke out when most of the inmates were asleep.

After unlocking the cells, the guards decided to flee for their own safety as the fire raged.

Two foreign inmates from Portugal and South Africa are among the dead.
