After over 750 delegates voted at Saturday’s convention in Abuja, Atiku Abubakar who is popularly known as Atiku got 371 votes, thereby beating 13 other candidates including former Senate President Bukola Saraki. This would be Atiku’s sixth shot at the presidency.

In his thank-you speech to the delegates for electing him, Mr Abubakar accused the ruling party of dividing Nigeria and causing economic hardship. He said “The government of the APC has divided Nigeria along regional and religious lines.”

“With you I pledge to ensure unity. I am going to deal with our security challenges in this country and to confront our economic challenges all caused by the APC government,” he continues.

Last week, Atiku was seriously ctiticized on social media for deleting a tweet in which he initially criticized the killing of Deborah Samuel by Islamic mob.
