According to the constitution, Duterte can’t run for re-election after his six-year term ends in June 2022.

In a surprise move, President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines who previously agreed to be the ruling political party’s vice-presidential candidate in next year’s elections, has now announced that he intends to retire from politics.

In other words, Duterte has confirmed the fact that he won’t attempt to extend his time in power by seeking the vice presidency.

This may pave a way for Manny Pacquiao who intends to run for Philippine president next year.

When he initially agreed to run as vice-president, his critics called it an attempt to circumvent the constitution’s one-term limit.

They say it was a plan for the puppet president to be sworn in, resign thereafter, and Duterte will automatically become the president again.
